About Pagoeta Natural Park

Pagoeta Natural Park is situated in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, northern Spain. Spanning nearly 1,200 hectares, the park encompasses a variety of landscapes including dense beech and oak forests, river valleys, pastures, and traditional rural farmsteads. Historically, the area was used for agriculture, iron ore mining, and charcoal production, traces of which remain visible in the well-preserved cultural heritage within the park. Today, Pagoeta serves as an outdoor recreation and educational area that balances natural conservation with cultural preservation. The park hosts a natural history museum, a traditional Basque charcoal kiln, and the Txakoli wine cooperative, which highlights local agricultural practices. Visitors can explore more than 30 kilometers of marked trails that cater to all skill levels, offering scenic views of verdant hills, streams, and historic sites. Wildlife commonly seen includes deer, wild boar, foxes, and a wide variety of bird species, underscoring its ecological richness. Pagoeta is also known for its efforts to maintain sustainable forestry and protect native flora and fauna. Its proximity to coastal towns such as Zarautz and Getaria makes it a favored day-trip destination for both locals and tourists seeking nature immersion combined with cultural experiences.
